Business and Strategic Planning If you do not know where you are going you are unlikely to get there! Planning is essential to ensure that the business has clear direction. Support through the planning process ensures that you end up with a thoroughly thought out plan that will be of practival help. A huge thick plan of waflle and padding is of no benefit to anyone - except perhaps the stationer! What is needed is a concise document with clear aims and objectives that can be used to measure performance against. Support can cover the development of the plan and the ongoing monitoring against the targets. Financial management is at the heart of every successful business. Many businesses do not have an understanding of their businesses or how they work. Through a process of introducing good strong systems and personal development of management a business can quickly maximise its financial effectiveness. Financial management need not be complicated and the needs of every business is different. Managing a business can be a lonely place. Every one looks to you for the answer and if it does not get done then it always ends up your job! Mentoring is a process that gives you someone outside the business to discuss matters, bounce ideas off or simply to ask a question. It can often lead to unknown problems being identified or difficult problems being dragged out and dealt with. You often know the answer to the question before you ask it. The answer to 'Lend 'us a tenner, Dad?' is always NO. So it is with grants - 'What grants can I get?' is always answered NONE. But there are grants available - they change very frequently, they vary across the region and depend on the type of business. Most grants are discretionary and require careful application. An example of this was when we were asked to help a family business to find a loan for a large capital project. At the first meeting the various options open to the company were discussed. It was pointed out that there might be some grant funding available, possibly £50k to £60k. At this point the father, who being in his late 70's was retired from the business, was called into the meeting. He said that in thirty years of being in business he had never recieved a grant of anything else for nothing and it was complete nonsense to suggest that such a thing could be obtained or if it could it must be a fiddle. He then went on, rather puzzlingly to say, that in 1955 when Littlewoods Pools started the treble change, the first dividend had been £55k. But it all became clear when he said that he had been filling in the pools every week since 1955 and he had mor echange of winning the treble chance than we had of finding him a £55k grant that he did not have to pay back. We went on to find grants exceeding £250k for the project and lost Littlewoods a customer!
